Ongoing Growth, 2011
Exhibition: LaMontagne Gallery, South Boston, MA; Fragments of Growth exhibited at New Art Center, Newton, MA and Louis Vuitton, Boston, MA
Growth is a major extension of the project Walking a-Long. The piece has grown rapidly from its original realization and, at this point, is comprised of more than three hundred 24"x 24" modules of painted grass.
When exhibited, the paintings covered the rear wall of the gallery and extended out on to the floor, leaving small paths for the visitors to navigate the piece and the space.
As in much of my previous work, Growth bridges a multitude of disparate influences: mural paintings, the immersive quality of the panoramic paintings of the 19th century, Richard Longs’ seminal piece A Line Made by Walking, landscape painting, the modernist grid, and the anti-industrial mode of production of Arte Povera.
